Brief History
The first discussions about forming a masonic lodge for people working at one of the Royal Residences took place in 2000 whilst palace staff were on duty at Balmoral. The idea soon gained a gentle momentum but it required more impetus to take off and after much discussion between various individuals a Luncheon Club, PRAETORJANUS REGES (loosely translated as Protectors of the Monarch), was formed in order to gauge whether there was sufficient and committed support to found a masonic lodge.
This Luncheon Club was very well attended on the several occasions it met during 2004-2006 at the Royal Overseas League building in Park Street, St James (just along the road from the present lodge meeting rooms) and a lodge steering committee was formed. The then Deputy Metropolitan Grand Master, Right Worshipful Brother Russell Race, DL was a guest at several of these lunches and through his encouragement and practical guidance and advice, further meetings of the lodge steering committee were held in 2006 and 2007 in a public house outside the walls of Buckingham Palace, The Bag O'Nails in Buckingham Palace Road.
These meetings determined that we did indeed have the support, enthusiasm and numbers of masons willing to form a lodge and founding members were soon queuing to register their interest, the bulk of whom had been members of the luncheon club. The initial Master and officers of the lodge were decided on by the steering committee and a draft set of By-Laws was agreed.
Initially the preferred name of the lodge was 'The Royal Household Lodge' but, although there was no initial refusal by Buckingham Palace for us to use the name, it was eventually changed in favour of the alternative and very apt name of Mulberry Lodge.
On Wednesday, 18 November 2008, Mulberry Lodge was consecrated by the Consecration Team of the Metropolitan Grand Lodge in the Grand Temple at Freemasons Hall, London. In attendance were approximately 350 freemasons, mostly guests of the founder members.
It has been 23 years from an idea over a sherry at Balmoral in 2000, through our Consecration in 2008 to our present status of a very well established and respected Lodge.
